BDU-EiTEX, is training students in the field of different areas of textiles such as textile engineering, textile chemical process engineering, garment engineering, fashion design, textile apparel merchandizing and leather engineering. The Institute has a long history, with its primary department established in 1963 as Textile Technology Department under Bahir Dar Polytechnic Institute. Considering the important role of the textile sector to the industry and economic progress of Ethiopia, Bahir Dar University upgraded the Department to Textile Engineering in 1998, and then to an institute levels in 2010 where it become autonomous and offering courses based on national as well as international needs in the textile sector.
Now, being autonomous, the institute has formed a complete educational system aimed at producing qualified graduates at the bachelor, masters and doctorate (in collaboration with different international Universities). The institute offers 7 undergraduate specialized subjects: Textile Engineering, Leather Engineering, Textile Chemical process Engineering, Garment Engineering, Fashion Design, Textile and Apparel Merchandising, Textile Technology Education /B level / and Garment Technology Education /B level/ and has an enrollment of about 2,300 full-time students. Also whereas it offers eight post graduate fields: Textile Chemistry, Textile Manufacturing, Fibers Science and technology, Fashion Technology, Leather Products and Engineering, Fashion Design, Textile Technology and Garment Technology and two PhD programs in Textile Technology and Fashion Technology. Currently, there are 218 full-time teachers with titles such as professors, associate professors, Lecturer and assistant lecturer and 551 administration staffs.
EiTEX is aspired to be one of the top three premier institutes in Africa in 2025 recognized for its quality education, research and community service. To fulfill the vision the institute has its own campus called “Selam Campus’’ with well equipped laboratories with latest technology, state art fashion hall, library and documentation centre, premiere research centres and academic programs, well established partnership with private, governmental, NGOs, Universities and research centers. Furthermore, the institute is expanding its scope to international standards of the textile sector development through teaching and learning, research, community service, consultancy, technology transfer, training and testing services and hosting participatory platforms such as annual international conference on Cotton, Textile and Apparel Value Chain in Africa.
